Xocoveza Mocha Stout

Chris Banker / Stone Brewing / Insurgente, Escondido, CA

Milk Stout, 8.1% ABV

People online have described this beer as a readily available substitute for Hunaphu or Mexican Cake which has caused a feeding frenzy.  Next time, keep it on the down low and buy them all for yourself to enjoy!  I won’t go as far as comparing this particular beer to those sought after beers, but I will say it is quite an enjoyable beverage and for a $9 bomber, it may very well be the pick of the season!

Format: 22oz. bottle
Availability: One-time release
Appearance: Poured from a 22oz bottle into a teku glass. The beer is dark chocolate in color with a thick persistent head.
Aroma: There’s an amazing nose, even sitting on the desk in front of me, the fragrance is intoxicating with cinnamon, chocolate, coffee and peppers.
Taste: No real heat as you would expect from the nose, fruity pepper flavors, great vanilla notes with a nutmeg/cinnamon spice kick, milk chocolate finish with just a slight twang from the peppers.
Mouthfeel: The body is a bit thin which makes this one go down a little too easily. There’s also spice notes on the palate after each sip; Very pleasant.
Overall: Delicious beer with smooth spice flavors, probably won’t age well, the spices will fall off quickly, but right now it is outstanding.  Drink this one fresh!
Insane Pairing: Traditional burnt caramel flan

Score: 4.6 / 5
