Crooked Stave Announces the Release of Nightmare on Brett Raspberry – Valentines Day 2017 

Denver, Colo. – February 9th, 2016 – Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project is excited to announce the first big release of 2017 and the launch of their 750ml cork and cage line up of specialty sour barrel-aged beers. First up for Crooked Stave is Nightmare in Brett Raspberry, just announced as Ratebeer.com’s top 50 beers released in 2016 with a perfect 100 rating.

Big plans for Valentines day? Why not spend it with Crooked Stave who has planned releases at retail stores across the state of Colorado, including 14 unique event tapping’s and a big kick off in their taproom at 3350 Brighton Blvd.

The Crooked Stave taproom event “Be My Valentine” will be the official release of Nightmare on Brett Raspberry, which the brewery aged with over 3,000 lbs of whole fruit raspberries from the 2016 harvest. Beer release festivities will be starting at 5:00pm MST at the 3350 Brighton Blvd Taproom, event details include:

Weekend Beer Buzz 02/09/2017

Hey guys, the Weekend Beer Buzz has returned with a slightly different approach this time. Rather than blasting you guys with dozens of events every weekend, we’re going to share our very favorite beer releases and beer related events. Think of it as the breweries, tappings and happenings you’d most likely find us hanging out, drinking and supporting.

Don’t forget it’s Stout Month. Head to your nearest Mountain Sun location and take part in this month long celebration of dark beers.

All Weekend

It has been an incredible two years at Ratio Beerworks and now it’s time to celebrate! We have an exciting weekend of events ranging from special anniversary beer releases, Ratio Comedy, and Ratio Sessions with special musical performances by some rad buds of ours.

The festivities will kick off on Friday, February 10th, with a night of Denver-centric Ratio Comedy curated by our In-House Comedian Ian Douglas Terry. Featuring: Mara Wiles, Ben Bryant, Timmi Lasley, James Draper, Andrew Bueno, and Matt Cobos, followed by a silent dance party from SoundDown Party – Denver’s Silent Disco Company.

On Saturday, February 11th, join Ratio at Noon for the release of this year’s anniversary beer, Continuous Thunder, a Double IPA showcasing Mosaic and Simcoe hops, with bright tropical fruit aromas, and ripe mango & pineapple flavors. Additionally we’ll be tapping a single half barrel keg of our upcoming release of Loveless, a beautiful, complex yet delicate, barrel-fermented Dark Sour Saison, which spent over a year in red wine barrels, before being re-fermented with raspberries. Loveless will receive the full kick off treatment on Tuesday, February 14th with a bottle release party, but get a preview of this limited barrel release in the taproom while you can.

Then to the main event… before heading out on their national headlining tour, Ratio welcomes Matt Pryor, frontman of legendary band, The Get Up Kids (8pm), as well as Dan Andriano of the seminal Alkaline Trio, for a special preview performance in the Ratio Brewhouse. Afterwards, we’ll keep the party rolling with DJ Digg spinning the dance party in the taproom.

On Sunday, February 12th, we’ll ease back into polite society with MILE HIGH SOUL CLUB spinning soul and mo-town vinyl in the taproom to accompany a Hangover Brunch featuring Bloody Mary Beers from The Real Dill and breakfast pizza & sandwiches from Denver Deep Dish LoHi.

Later that afternoon, Ratio Beerworks will also take part in the Valentine’s Day RiNo Love Triangle event alongside Epic Brewing Company – Denver Taproom and Rackhouse Pub. The three neighbors will be offering a progressive beer and cider dinner with stops at all three RiNo establishments culminating in the dessert portion featuring Sugar Bakeshop and Coffee House at Ratio.

Clearly there’s a ton happening all weekend long, but at the very least we can’t wait to connect with friends old and new and cheers to a fantastic two years. It’s going to be an anniversary to remember!

Doors will open at our usual time of 11am. As people arrive we will be issuing Tickets that allow you to purchase a glass of Pliny the Younger. There will be 2 colors of tickets; if you get the first color, relax, sit down, start a tab, get something to eat & a warm-up beer or two, you are getting a Younger, if you get the second color, well, Maybe. When it comes time to tap Younger, we will start by selling it to all of the folks with the first color; if you are seated & have a tab with a server, you can stay seated because the server will bring it to you. If you don’t have a table line up, no pushing or shoving, and get your beer. When we finish serving all the folks with the first color we will do a last call for that color ticket then line up the second color tickets in order (they have numbers written on the back 1-??) & start serving those folks. In order to get a Pliny the Younger you need to be here before we do last call for that color of tickets (usually around 25-30 minutes after we start pouring it) or you lose your chance & we give it to the next person in line.

I know it might sound a bit complex, but it’s really simple & has made our Pliny the Younger release days a lot easier, more civilized & less stressful for everyone involved as well as giving more people the opportunity to drink some truly amazing beer. Last year all the folks with the second color got a Younger, just saying.

Crooked Stave Announces 2017 Launch of New 750ml Cork and Cage Packaging With Nightmare on Brett Raspberry Set For Valentines Day

Denver, Colo. – February 4th, 2017 – Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project is gearing up for a strong 2017. It was a tenacious 2016 which saw the culmination of Crooked Stave’s investment of nearly 3 million dollars to launch it’s fully customized brewery, including a new brewhouse with coolship, new fully hard piped stainless steel fermentation cellar, nearly doubling the size of their Foeder Farm, committing to 100% whole fruit in all of it’s fruited sour beers and last but not least, new packaging equipment including a 750ml bottling line built out with cork and caging capabilities. With the new equipment on line and processes dialed in, the brewery has been busy packaging the upcoming years many sought after and limited release beers into the new 750ml bottles, complete with custom corks and cages as well as some very limited 1.5L Magnums of select barrels.

“2016 was a whirlwind of a year, “ said Chad Yakobson, Crooked Stave Owner and Brewmaster. “Our skilled production team doubled in size, and we re-developed each of our processes to maintain our vision as a world leader in the fermentation of sour and wild beer with quality continuing to guide each successful step forward. 2016 also saw us release clean beers to the market and those have taken off, being wildly successful for us. 2017 is the year where we get to show off all the hard work we have put in over the last 6 years to get to this point. The brewery is set to release all of its Barrel Cellar Blends including L’Brett d’Or, Flor d’Lees, Origins and Nightmare on Brett in 750ml cork and cage format along with being 100% bottle conditioned. In addition to these brewery favorites, 2017 will see the creation of the Reserve Cellars Releases which includes a new 750ml limited offering each month. These are the breweries highly sought after fruit sours, produced with 100% whole fruit sourced locally from Colorado and Washington state, including favorites like L’Brett d’Raspberry, Persica, Surette Reserva with Palisade Peaches, Mama Bears Sour Cherry Pie and Nightmare on Brett Raspberry. Limited Reserve Cellars Releases have also made their way into 1.5L magnums to be released at various Taproom events. New for 2017 is the addition of taproom only releases. The brewery has been busy producing single barrel bottling’s and limited blends of new and creative beers. While the amount of bottles varies, some of these releases include as few as only 200 bottles.

“We see many of our 2017 taproom only releases selling out the day they are released, given the very small number of bottles packaged,” says, Brett Zarhte, Packaging Manager at Crooked Stave. “These bottling runs are over before they start they are so small. Our packaging team loves these runs, especially when we add a few 1.5L Magnums to the mix. It’s a beautiful bottle when it’s all said and done.”

First up for Crooked Stave is Nightmare in Brett Raspberry, just announced as Ratebeer.com’s top 50 beers released in 2016 with a perfect 100 rating. Set your calendars for February 14th, Valentines day and the annual release day of Nightmare on Brett Raspberry. The taproom is gearing up with custom made chocolates that incorporate the beer into the chocolate, a slew of vintage tapping’s and bottle releases including some 1.5L Magnums of the beer and the release of additional 750ml cork and cage bottles.

Party Time At 10 Barrel Brewing’s Grand Opening Block Party

If you’ve been brewery or beer bar hopping in Denver’s RiNo neighborhood recently you’ve probably noticed and maybe even popped into the new 10 Barrel Denver brewpub for a pint. Well, this weekend the folks from 10 Barrel are going big and throwing a huge block party that will be packed with live music, giveaways, a ski and snowboarding contest, and of course lots of tasty brews. The best part is that it is a FREE party for all ages!

This Saturday, January 28th is the Grand Opening Celebration of the new spot located at 2620 Walnut St in RiNo. They’ll be shutting down a block of Walnut between 26th and 27th streets for the festivities, which will run 4-10pm. Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Finds New Home In Breckenridge

This past weekend, we were able to immerse ourselves in all things beer at the annual Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival. Despite an unavoidable venue change and making the jump up I-70 from Vail to Breckenridge, this celebration of world-class craft beer didn’t miss a beat.

We began our Big Beers weekend with a long overdue visit to Westbound & Down Brewing Company in Idaho Springs. These guys are serving up some killer beers, ranging from a Pale Ale to Belgian-style Tripel. There was even a damn good collaboration Double IPA with Comrade Brewing called Nuclear Football. The food was good, the beer was on point and it’s definitely a place we’ll revisit on future trips to the high country.

Shortly after arriving in Breckenridge, we had to make our standard visit to Broken Compass Brewing. The tasting room was wall-to-wall people (and dogs), but that couldn’t keep us away from their heavenly Coconut Porter. These guys have been firing on all cylinders since day one and beer lovers continue to support what they’re doing.

Eventually we made our way to Beaver Run Resort, settled into our rooms and got ready for a long weekend of stellar beer, shared with even better friends. Some of our team headed to the Small Plates & Craft Beer Pairing, while others prepared for a relaxing bottle share.

At the end of the day, we all met up at the Cigar Pairing Experience. While I don’t smoke, I still wanted to take a peek at what beers were available to sample. From Crooked Stave’s Sours to Weldwerk’s Stouts, there was something for everyone and it was the perfect way to wrap up Day 1.

The following day offered up multiple seminars, all building up to the Commercial Tasting. Somehow I got roped into Beer & Yoga. Fortunately, it was sponsored by Dry Dock Brewing, so my not so nimble limbs were rewarded with pours of Dry Dock’s Signature Series Double Hazelnut Brown at 10 AM. I was a yoga virgin, but the instructors were excellent and I enjoyed the experience. Although, for next year, it might be nice to have a dedicated room, away from foot traffic. There’s nothing like being heckled by your friends while you’re leading into that Downward Dog. Hopefully no pictures exist of these shenanigans.

Big Beers Festival Serves Up Memorable Beer and Food Experience

The annual Big Beers, Belgians and Barleywine Festival, held this year for the first time in Breckenridge after a decade in Vail, is renowned not only for an excellent blend of outstanding beers and wonderful people but also for the educational component put together by the hard-working staff of the Brewers Association. On Friday, we had the privilege of attending the Craftbeer.com Beer and Food Experience hosted by Mike Lawinski of FATE Brewing Company, Brewers Association Executive Chef Adam Dulye and Julia Herz, the Brewers Association Craft Beer Program Director. Through the course of the hour session, we worked through five pairings, each matching a classically prepared cassoulet with a different beer to different effect.

Each taster discovered a novel experience with each beer with every palate being attuned to different nuances but the overall lesson was one of synthesis and how the combining of flavors and sensation create a whole greater than the parts. Starting with FATE Brewing’s Roggenbier, it became obvious there were deeper interaction between the food and beer going on. Our first lesson was in how to taste, mastering a repeated method of sip – taste- sip. Sip the beer, let it linger, taste the food and then another taste of the beer to enjoy the blending of flavors and finish. The malt and rye notes of the roggenbier melded into a surprising sweetness when combined with the savory pork and bean dish, offering more complexity than either alone presented.

Down the line, each beer enhanced the experience of eating and drinking in novel fashion from the bright citrusy lemon note expressed by Crooked Stave’s Surrete Farmhouse to the peppery finish of the Sierra Nevada/Russian River collaboration beer Brux.  Everyone in the room thought the spotlight pairing was certainly the outstanding nutty rich notes brought forward by Tröegs Doppelbock, Troegenator but the presenters had one more trick up their sleeve.

After detailing how the Brewers Association works to describe a beer when preparing for a pairing and then how Chef Dulye works from the other direction to match a beer with a food to create an experience, a lasting memory, Chef Dulye shared a memory of seeing a food service worker toasting wood with a blowtorch during his culinary travels. Inspired by this, our delicious cassoulet and Alaskan Brewing Winter Ale, we were presented with a branded spruce coaster, freshly seared with a torch and placed on top a glass of the Winter Ale.

The interaction of the toasted spruce aroma with the malt backbone of the winter seasonal with the wink and nod to the fresh spruce tips in the beer elevated the experience to a concrete memory that will not easily fade. When tasted with the cassoulet, unexpected notes of coconut and vanilla were present, solidifying the advancement of an easily accessible seasonal beer to a work of art. Eyes were opened, palates expanded and the march forward to legitimize the rightful place of beer at the table took strong strides forward. Thanks to the Brewers Association for their continuing efforts towards layman education and a wonderful start to a Friday night of beer exploration!

  • * Imperial IPA

2×4’s award winning cousin. The * Imperial IPA uses copious amounts of mosaic hops that give this beer strong notes of tropical fruit, stone fruit, mango and berries. Brewed with a blend of northwest 2-row, light crystal, mosaic hops and some stuff you don’t even know about.

  • Drunken Master Imperial IPA

Born out of the Melvin R&D facility on Wyoming’s West Coast, also known as the closet. Brewed with a blend of Columbus, Citra and some Top-Secret hops left over from the great east vs. west hip hop battles. Hopped with over 3 pounds per barrel. Drunken Master is the 2016 National IIPA Champion. Sure to make you a Drunken Master if you consume too many of these bad boys. Cheers from the crew at Melvin. Please, only practice your Karate after a four pack and bow to your sensei.

  • Citradamus Imperial IPA

The great Citradamus predicts this IIPA will be one of your favorites. Citradamus is Melvin’s world class IIPA brewed with 100% Citra hops, pristine mountain water and northwest malt. Flavors of citrus (duh), pine and total dankness. Dry hopped with ludicrous amounts of Citra for that classic hoppiness that Melvin has become known for.

  • Lambda Triple IPA

The crew at Melvin decided to push their system to the max on all levels. Brewed with 4 plus lbs of Simcoe and Mosaic hops per barrel then double dry hopped. Flavors of peach, stone fruit and herbal forest. Sure to put you in the gravel pit.

Head to the original Breckenridge Brewery & Pub on Thursday to meet the brewers, tour the facility and sample some of their limited offerings, including Sours, Saisons and Barrel-Aged brews.

Friday, January 6th, 2017

Basecamp Wine and Spirits will release a special batch of Casey’s Oak Theory on Friday at Noon. This batch was aged in a AD Laws Whiskey and Rye Barrel. Bottle release is at Noon, followed by a tasting with Troy Casey from 2 – 4 PM. Basecamp Wine and Spirits is located at: 223 Lusher Ct, Unit 1, Frisco, CO.

Two of our favorite breweries will join forces on Friday night. No cover, but pay as you go. Black Friday Beer Release Guide

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. We’re in the middle of moving and life is pretty nuts right now. But, with Black Friday just around the corner and sooooo many cool events on the schedule, we wanted to take a few minutes to give you a rundown of what’s happening around town.

The nice thing is that you’ve got plenty of options. We love BCBS, but we love that our local brewers have dozens of awesome stouts ready to release as well. You’ve got options. Choose wisely.

Begin your Friday over at Ratio where they’ll tap new brews paired with breakfast. Look for Young Pilgrims Raspberry Belgian Dubbel, alongside a limited release of Coffee Domestica. They’ll also have breakfast burritos from Illegal Pete’s, donuts from Fractured Prune and coffee from Novo Coffee. Ratio Beerworks is located at: 2920 Larimer St, Denver, CO.

Station 26 has an impressive lineup of Dark Star and variants set to release this year. This year’s base beer clocks in at more than 13% ABV and spent 10 months in bourbon barrels. There are 11 variants to sample in the tap room, plus three special beers that’ll be available to-go.

Cerebral Brewing’s releasing Ancient Ruins on Friday. This new brew’s a 9.0% ABV Imperial Chocolate Stout brewed with chocolate malts, cacao husks and Haitian cacao nibs. They’ll also have 3 variants to share – Blackberry, Sea Salt & Orange Zest, and Toasted Coconut.

What would Black Friday be without the mention of WeldWerks? The brewery’s been making waves all year with their impressive stouts and hazy IPAs. On Friday, they’ll offer up both on draft and in Crowlers – Mexican Achromatic, their 10.5% ABV Imperial Stout, brewed with cacao nibs, Madagascar vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks. Crowlers will sell for $21 / each, limit of 2 / person.

In addition, WeldWerks plans to release several cases that were held back from their GABF release of Barrel Aged Mexican Achromatic (BAMA). $14 / each, limit of 2 / person.

Fourth Estate was the collaboration brew we brewed with the help of Lost Highway Brewing, plus PorchDrinking, The Brewtography Project, Westword, 9 News and other friends from the local media for Collaboration Fest. The Belgian Chocolate Stout was absolutely delicious and Lost Highway plans to release a Barrel-Aged Version on Black Friday.

I’m admittedly a little biased on this one, but we know you’ll love this beer. And it’s close to some funky record shops on Colfax for all you Black Friday record hunters. Lost Highway Brewing is located at: 520 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO.

  • Dual Bottle Release, Banded Oak Brewing, Denver, CO

Banded Oak Brewing’s got a sweet pair of barrel-aged brews set to release in bottles on Friday.

Look for Barrel Aged Rye Saison – 10.3% ABV, 21 IBU

Matured in French oak Cabernet wine barrels for 6 months, this dark, imperial take on the classic Belgian style offers strong notes of tart cherries and lightly roasted coffee beans coated in a rich chocolate, with figs and plums and a slight hint of banana. The oak lends a complexity of vanilla and tea leaf like tannins, while the residual Cabernet present in the staves of the barrel comes through with a wintergreen and rosemary camphor leaving the finish dry with mild peppery spice and warming alcohol.

 Also seek out Barrel Aged Scotch Ale – 8.2% ABV, 15 IBU

A full-bodied wee heavy style with bold suggestions of molasses and toffee melding with toasted and biscuity malt that lend flavors of raisins, toast and fire roasted almonds. With 5 months in French Oak Cabernet barrels this beer takes on a velvety like smoothness with an addition of smoked wood, ripe red fruit and a restrained sweetness in the finish and the moderate burn of alcohol to balance the richness on the front end.

When Factotum released Cranberry Cream Ale last Winter, they decided to hold back a bit for aging in a Chardonnay Barrel. 9 Months later it’s been bottled and ready to share with friends this Winter. Ursula Brewery’s releasing Évoluer Pinot Noir Barrel Aged Golden Sour on Friday. Bottles will be available for $15 / each, limit of 4 / person. No draft, but samples will be sold for those purchasing bottles. They’ll also offer discounts on other bottles and merchandise. Ursula Brewery is located at: 2101 N Ursula St, Aurora, CO.

Odd13 plans to launch 3 new brews on Black Friday. Sir Joshua‘s a Black IPA and Double Buzzin Cuzzin is an Imperial Stout with Mole Spices. Both will also hit local liquor stores. Saint Nicole‘s the third release they have planned, which is a Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout that will be available in bottles. Come hang out in the tap room and try some of the variants of Saint Nicole’s that are set to be tapped.

  • Bottle Release, Spangalang Brewery, Denver, CO

Spangalang Brewery’s releasing bottles of Nightwalker Con Alma, which is an Imperial Stout refermented with Tempranillo grape juice in red wine barrels. There’s only about 70 – 750 mL bottles to go around, so don’t delay. $19 / each. Spangalang Brewery is located at: 2736 Welton St, Denver, CO.

Falling Rock Tap House will tap their last keg of Goose Island BCBS (2015) and donate proceeds to the Colorado Brewers Guild. Chris and the crew are done with big beer buyouts and have decided to take this opportunity to send them off while benefitting local craft. Brilliant.   • Bourbon Count Brand Stout Preview, Acorn, Denver, CO, Wednesday, 6 – 8 PM

Acorn’s firing up the party early with a little preview on Wednesday. They’ll have 4 BCBS beers to share by the glass and by the flight.

  • Bourbon County Brand Stout, Goose Island

We recently had the privilege to preview this year’s Bourbon County lineup and thoroughly enjoyed them all. Barleywine was my personal favorite, while Mrs. Insane loved the earthy notes present in the Coffee.

Based off early announcements from local stores, it does seem like we’ll be getting significantly less when compared to last year’s allocation. Plan accordingly. Prop is Chicago only. Here’s the details on the ’16 lineup.

Finally, not an official Black Friday release, but Epic recently released Double Barrel Big Bad Baptist and Big Bad Baptista. Both are freakin’ delish and should be on your radar while you’re out and about.
