Weekend Beer Buzz 03/02/2017

Hey guys, the Weekend Beer Buzz has returned with a slightly different approach this time. Rather than blasting you guys with dozens of events every weekend, we’re going to share our very favorite beer releases and beer related events. Think of it as the breweries, tappings and happenings you’d most likely find us hanging out, drinking and supporting.

Thursday, March 2nd, 2017

As we’ve settled into 2017, we continue to look for the beautiful things this life has to offer as the world swirls around us. Sometimes, you don’t have to look much further than your own neighborhood brewery. Today, we come to you with news of the first Carriage House Series Bottle Release of 2017.

On March 2nd at 3pm, join us for the unveiling of ‘Really Really Ridiculously Good Tasting’ a Petite Farmhouse Saison handsomely aged in Chardonnay Barrels.

Our latest barrel project started with a delicate blend of Pilsner, White Wheat and Acidulated malts. We then added Bravo hops for a spicy and floral balance. Primary fermentation began with a traditional French Saison yeast, but we later barrel-conditioned for months on end with Brett Claussenii to add farmhouse characteristics to this well-rounded beer. Expect notes of cantalope. lemon zest, and light barnyard funk with soft layers of vanilla and coconut in the finish.

‘Really, Really, Ridiculously Good Tasting’ will be released on Thursday, March 2nd at 3pm when we open the doors for business. There will only be 120 375mL bottles available, with a limit of 2 bottles per customer. There will also be a limited amount of ‘Really, Really, Ridiculously Good Tasting’ available on tap for this event!

Call to Arms Brewing is located at: 4526 Tennyson St, Denver, CO.

Join Ratio Beerworks in celebrating the return of Rented World Session IPA.

Originally inspired by the Possible Worlds collaboration with our friends at Call to Arms, Cannonball Creek, Station 26, and TRVE, Rented World was such a staff favorite, that we decided to bring it back full time as a Session IPA.

For Rented World, we employed our highest volume of late aroma hops to date, with massive amounts of Citra and El Dorado. Measuring in at an approachable 4.8% and 41 IBUs, this easy-drinking session IPA is big on bright citrus and pine flavors, but a mere wrinkle on the harsh bitterness scale due to the limited use of bittering hops.

Join Ratio in welcoming Rented World Session back to our core rotation of beers.

  • Collaboration Tapping, Blue Moon RiNo, Denver, CO, 11 AM

We heard you all like hazy IPAs. We will be releasing our collab with Fermaentra this Friday at Blue Moon RINO. Fermaentra will release a version shortly after. Brewed with 5 pounds per barrel of Amarillo, Azacca, Waimea, Southern Cross, Huel Melon, Mandarina Bavaria, Mosaic and Exp. 06300. We didn’t skimp on the hops.

Blue Moon RiNo is located at: 3750 Chestnut Pl, Denver, CO.

Join us for the release of You Do You, a 5.9% DDH Pale Ale hopped with Centennial, Amarillo, Motueka and Ekuanot (formerly Equinox) at over 7#/bbl. Do you even haze brah?

Seriously though, we’re immensely passionate about producing beers in this style and have been so since we opened 16 months ago. Trends come and go. Do what you love. Love what you do. You do you.

Outer Range Brewing, Colorado’s Newest Hidden Gem, Go Find It!

When you first enter Outer Range Brewing Co in Frisco, CO, a huge mural of Jim Pasholka adorns the wall. Jim started the Snowcap Sled Dogs in Breckenridge, and is a local legend. The mural immediately gives you the feeling of the mountain spirit and community of this brewery. I first visited Outer Range on the Sunday following this year’s Big Beers festival in Breckenridge. At that point they had only been open for about 2 weeks, their opening day was December 26, 2016.

On my initial visit, I met Ryan Chang, one of the co-owners. He told me a little bit about their history and philosophy. I was blown away by their beers, specifically their New England-style IPAs. How can a brewery be so good and only 2 weeks old? I decided I needed to come back and learn more. On my second visit (technically, my third since I stopped for beers the day before the interview), I met with Lee Cleghorn, the sole brewer and co-owner (Lee’s wife, Emily, is also a co-owner). We sat down so I could dive deeper into their history and brewing philosophy.

Screen Shot 2017-02-22 at 12.20.57 PM

Lee started brewing in college and continued to brew while he was in the Army. He attended the American Brewers Guild in Vermont and later served as an intern at Other Half Brewing in New York (well-known for their NE-style IPAs). Lee, Ryan and Emily all served together in the Army, where they eventually decided to go into business together. Together, they completed all the work on the brewery, including design and construction of the brewhouse and tap room.

outer range 3

Outer Range’s name comes from a Rudyard Kipling poem, The Explorer:

“Something hidden. Go and find it. Go and look behind the Ranges-

“Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go!”

Since the Outer Range crew were all in the military, they moved around often, but all shared a love for the mountains and particularly Summit County. They decided on their current location because of the view; outside the front window, the beautiful mountain ranges add to the atmosphere.

TRVE Brewing Brings The Commons, Burial Beer to Colorado

TRVE Brewing Imports The Commons, More Burial Beer, Releases Collaboration Brews, Attempts to Catch Breath Thereafter

What began as simply importing and distributing Burial Beer Co. for last year’s Great American Beer Festival, TRVE Brewing Co. has also agreed to act as the Colorado distribution partner for The Commons Brewery of Portland, Oregon.

The Commons, known for their yeast-forward, sessionable beers, is an apt addition to TRVE’s own distribution portfolio of approachable beers. “We’re extremely excited about this relationship,” said TRVE Brewing founder Nick Nunns. “During the Craft Brewers Conference of 2015 we made visits to The Commons almost daily. They stunned us with the quality of the beer they’re producing, and now we get to help introduce these great beers to beer drinkers in our home state.”

TRVE will also be bringing in another shipment of beers from Burial Beer Co. of Asheville, North Carolina, to coincide with the releases of their two collaborations. The first will be Ritual Knife, a Black Braggot brewed with honey and Colorado malt from Troubador Maltings, and aged in brandy barrels. The second, brewed at The Acid Temple, is a Dark Mixed Culture ale brewed with malt from Riverbend Malt House of Asheville, NC, and aged in barrels from Laws Whiskey House of Denver, CO.

TRVE Brewing is slated to receive shipments from The Commons and Burial Beer in early March. Tuesday, March 21st will mark Denver’s introduction to The Commons by way of a mini tap-takeover at their tasting room, followed by distribution to a limited number of accounts in the Denver area. Burial will be taking over the taps at TRVE on Thursday, March 23rd with another night sure to excite Colorado beer fans.

Briar Common Brewery Redefines Pub Grub

Briar Common Brewery + Eatery opened up in Denver’s Jefferson Park neighborhood in October 2016. It is the brainchild and long-time vision of brothers Kent and Greg Dawson.

The concept is different and unique enough to really standout in a sometimes crowded Denver craft beer market. First, they want to be neighborhood focused and give a place back to the locals. At the heart of the brewpub are their beer and food pairings. It’s a place that provides elevated food options, while staying true to being a brewery, as the guys say “their soul is in the beer.” The kitchen is adventurous and has a beer-first mentality, often including beer in the cooking process. The only thing not currently made in-house, from scratch, are the hamburger buns!

Kent and Greg have been homebrewing for a long time, with Kent going on 20 years since his “first batch of crappy beer” and Greg honing his skill while working in Seoul for about 10 years. At Briar Common, Greg has assumed all brewing responsibilities, working on a 7bbl system, while Kent, with his business background is the head of operations.

briar common 1

The beer program consists of 3 core “American” styles, 3 Belgian styles, plus seasonal offerings. They are in the works of creating a Brettanomyces program as well.

Briar – Pale Ae
Thistle –  IPA
Rochus – Porter

Joyce – Saison
Lanham – Dubbel
Hobart – Belgian IPA

Current seasonals:
Alison – Winter Warmer
902-Bravo – Straight Brett

Although Greg had only homebrewed prior to starting up the brewery, he is a Certified Beer Judge (BJCP) and certified Cicerone, so he knows about creating approachable, drinkable beers that are meant to accentuate a great meal. He has decided to use the same yeast strain for all the American styles and similarly all of the Belgian program uses a single yeast strain.

The team at Briar Common was gracious enough to have me in for a beer pairing, and it did not disappoint! I am guilty of walking into a newer brewery, sampling a couple of things, probably drinking a full pour of one beer, and then moving on to the next spot. You should NOT do this at Briar Common. Whether you are looking for a full meal, or need an after work happy hour snack, they have designed their menu with pairings in mind. Their idea is to match intensities, meaning don’t let the beer overpower the dish or vice versa.

The menu has something for everyone’s tastes, here are a few of my favorites:

Weekend Beer Buzz 02/16/2017

Hey guys, the Weekend Beer Buzz has returned with a slightly different approach this time. Rather than blasting you guys with dozens of events every weekend, we’re going to share our very favorite beer releases and beer related events. Think of it as the breweries, tappings and happenings you’d most likely find us hanging out, drinking and supporting.

Don’t forget it’s Stout Month. Head to your nearest Mountain Sun location and take part in this month-long celebration of dark beers.

Thursday, February 16th, 2017

On Thursday, February 16 we will be releasing Alpha Bits 3, which is an IPL version of Juicy Bits, our popular New England-style IPA. The Alpha Bits series serves as both our playground and proving ground for experimenting with new hop varietals, different brewing techniques, and in this case, different yeast. Fermented cold with the same lager strain used for Puesta del Sol (our Vienna Lager) Alpha Bits 3 followed nearly the exact same hop schedule as Juicy Bits, using 3.3 lbs of Citra, Mosaic and El Dorado. The colder fermentation and extended lagering kept the fermentation profile clean and crisp, allowing the hops to truly shine, resulting in a beer suprisingly unique from its predecessor.

Alpha Bits 3 will be on tap and available in crowlers to-go starting when the taproom opens on Thursday, February 16. We will have approximately 200 crowlers available, with a limit of 4 per person.

WeldWerks Brewing is located at: 508 8th Ave, Greeley, CO

Well its that time of year again! We will be tapping our keg of Russian River Brewing Company Pliny the Younger on Thursday 2/16/17. Again this year we will be working with Elite Brands to raise money for Sense of Security. Their mission is to help Colorado breast cancer patients survive financially while they are undergoing breast cancer treatment. We will be donating $2 from every Pliny the Younger purchase for this worthy cause.

We will also be tapping a keg each of Consecration and Supplication for your enjoyment.

Time some details:
*This is a highly sought after beer and we will only be getting a very limited amount. This means that we have to have a system in place to divide it up fairly. We will begin distributing tickets to guests interested in purchasing a pour of this amazing beer that are in the restaurant at 5:30 pm*

A ticket guarantees a pour of the beer. In order to receive a ticket you will need a valid ID showing that you are of legal drinking age. One ticket per guest (no, we’re sorry you can’t get an extra ticket for your friend that is coming later). Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Once you have a ticket you can relax, you will get a pour of the beer. Enjoy some food or one of the other fine beverages that we will pouring that evening. We will be serving 6 oz pours of Pliny the Younger and the price will be $8, inclusive of the $2 donation. You will not be asked to pay for your beer until you actually receive it. You will need to either pay cash or put it on a tab at the time that we tap the keg. We highly suggest starting a tab before 6 pm.

We will tap the keg at 6:00 pm. In the past few years it has been completely gone by 6:30 pm and we anticipate this will be the same in 2017.

As an FYI, after initial tickets are passed out we will then have a few remaining “second chance” tickets which will be numbered. These “second chance” tickets do not secure you a pour, but allow you the chance to get one of the last few remaining pours until the keg kicks.

We have run this event the same way every year with great success and we hope everyone has a great time! See you on Thursday 2/16/17!

SUPERCRUISE: Cabernet Franc
750mL bottle, cork and cage – $30/bottle

SUPERCRUISE: Cabernet Sauvignon
750mL bottle, cork and cage – $30/bottle

MACH-LIMIT: Cabernet Sauvignon
750mL bottle, cork and cage – $32/bottle

Each beer starts with wine grapes from locally-sourced, family-owned vineyards in Palisade, CO. Once the grapes have been destemmed and crushed, we allow the juice to rest for a few days – developing rich color and depth of flavor – before finally transferring the juice to neutral oak barrels along with our base Golden Sour. The beer then goes through a secondary fermentation while resting on the grapes, and after a few weeks is ready to bottle.

Fruited at the highest limit allowed, thereby creating a beer that is truly something of a hybrid with intense grape character – almost sangria-like. This beer should age well with proper cellaring; however, the grape character may diminish over time.

Wine grapes from Mesa Park Vineyard

Fruited at about half of what we do for Mach-Limit, the stonefruit character from the base beer is backed by bright fruit and soft tannins, yet the beer still shines through. This beer should age well with proper cellaring; however, the grape character may diminish over time.

  • Palisade Reunion Bottle Release, Powder Keg Brewing Company, Niwot, CO, Noon

Palisade Reunion Batch 2: Our golden sour beer aged on Colorado-grown Palisade Peaches!

Price: $20/750ml (tax included)
Limits: 4x bottles per customer. 548 bottles available.
First come, first served.

How it compares to Batch 1: More peaches, our favorite 3 varietals and more carbonation. This year we took 200 gallons of our favorite golden sour wort and aged it on 1000 pounds of Colorado-grown peaches for 3 months (a fruiting ratio of 5lbs/gallon!). There was so much fruit that we rented a special wine fermention tank from California for the occasion and had to punchdown the fruit to keep it in contact with the beer. Batch 1 consisted of 220 gallons of sour beer, racked onto 700lbs of peaches (3.18lbs/gallon). For Batch 2 we also selected our 3 favorite varietals of the year, Cresthaven, Suncrest and JH Hale. For Batch 1 we ordered #2 peaches which growers use to reference the ones that fall of the tree on their own, are bruised and aren’t pretty enough to sell on regular store shelves. While these peaches still make wonderful beer, they are an unknown grab bag of varietals, some so sweet and overripe that the flavor nearly completely ferments out. By selecting the exact varitals that I wanted this year we were able to select juicy peaches with some residual tartness which I’ve found to translate into better, more complete, peach flavor in the finished product. It took more time and coordination to work with our peach grower, but overall the effort was totally worth it! Over the past year we have tweaked our bottle conditioning methodology for more consistency and while some bottles were slightly undercarbed last year, we think this years batch has just the right amount of carbonation to really accentuate the peach aromas! Just like last years batch, we used the same house culture, so if you want bright juicy peaches, drink fresh. With age the beer will develop a deep funk thanks to the various brettanomyces strains present in the beer and will age gracefully.

For transparency sake, last years batch was only $16. The additional cost this year is due to higher quality, specific varietals of peaches and a lot more of them while yielding a lower volume of finished beer.

We’re incredibly excited to share the beer with you!

Head to your nearest Mountain Sun location and take part in this month long celebration of dark beers.

All Weekend

It has been an incredible two years at Ratio Beerworks and now it’s time to celebrate! We have an exciting weekend of events ranging from special anniversary beer releases, Ratio Comedy, and Ratio Sessions with special musical performances by some rad buds of ours.

The festivities will kick off on Friday, February 10th, with a night of Denver-centric Ratio Comedy curated by our In-House Comedian Ian Douglas Terry. Featuring: Mara Wiles, Ben Bryant, Timmi Lasley, James Draper, Andrew Bueno, and Matt Cobos, followed by a silent dance party from SoundDown Party – Denver’s Silent Disco Company.

On Saturday, February 11th, join Ratio at Noon for the release of this year’s anniversary beer, Continuous Thunder, a Double IPA showcasing Mosaic and Simcoe hops, with bright tropical fruit aromas, and ripe mango & pineapple flavors. Additionally we’ll be tapping a single half barrel keg of our upcoming release of Loveless, a beautiful, complex yet delicate, barrel-fermented Dark Sour Saison, which spent over a year in red wine barrels, before being re-fermented with raspberries. Loveless will receive the full kick off treatment on Tuesday, February 14th with a bottle release party, but get a preview of this limited barrel release in the taproom while you can.

Then to the main event… before heading out on their national headlining tour, Ratio welcomes Matt Pryor, frontman of legendary band, The Get Up Kids (8pm), as well as Dan Andriano of the seminal Alkaline Trio, for a special preview performance in the Ratio Brewhouse. Afterwards, we’ll keep the party rolling with DJ Digg spinning the dance party in the taproom.

On Sunday, February 12th, we’ll ease back into polite society with MILE HIGH SOUL CLUB spinning soul and mo-town vinyl in the taproom to accompany a Hangover Brunch featuring Bloody Mary Beers from The Real Dill and breakfast pizza & sandwiches from Denver Deep Dish LoHi.

Later that afternoon, Ratio Beerworks will also take part in the Valentine’s Day RiNo Love Triangle event alongside Epic Brewing Company – Denver Taproom and Rackhouse Pub. The three neighbors will be offering a progressive beer and cider dinner with stops at all three RiNo establishments culminating in the dessert portion featuring Sugar Bakeshop and Coffee House at Ratio.

Clearly there’s a ton happening all weekend long, but at the very least we can’t wait to connect with friends old and new and cheers to a fantastic two years. It’s going to be an anniversary to remember!

Doors will open at our usual time of 11am. As people arrive we will be issuing Tickets that allow you to purchase a glass of Pliny the Younger. There will be 2 colors of tickets; if you get the first color, relax, sit down, start a tab, get something to eat & a warm-up beer or two, you are getting a Younger, if you get the second color, well, Maybe. When it comes time to tap Younger, we will start by selling it to all of the folks with the first color; if you are seated & have a tab with a server, you can stay seated because the server will bring it to you. If you don’t have a table line up, no pushing or shoving, and get your beer. When we finish serving all the folks with the first color we will do a last call for that color ticket then line up the second color tickets in order (they have numbers written on the back 1-??) & start serving those folks. In order to get a Pliny the Younger you need to be here before we do last call for that color of tickets (usually around 25-30 minutes after we start pouring it) or you lose your chance & we give it to the next person in line.

I know it might sound a bit complex, but it’s really simple & has made our Pliny the Younger release days a lot easier, more civilized & less stressful for everyone involved as well as giving more people the opportunity to drink some truly amazing beer. Last year all the folks with the second color got a Younger, just saying.

WE CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A TAB OPEN TO SPEED THIS PROCESS UP!! BETTER YET, PAY CASH! We will not close tabs during this process because no one wants to wait all day for their Younger! – See more at:

Crooked Stave Shares Plans For 2017

Crooked Stave Announces 2017 Launch of New 750ml Cork and Cage Packaging With Nightmare on Brett Raspberry Set For Valentines Day

Denver, Colo. – February 4th, 2017 – Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project is gearing up for a strong 2017. It was a tenacious 2016 which saw the culmination of Crooked Stave’s investment of nearly 3 million dollars to launch it’s fully customized brewery, including a new brewhouse with coolship, new fully hard piped stainless steel fermentation cellar, nearly doubling the size of their Foeder Farm, committing to 100% whole fruit in all of it’s fruited sour beers and last but not least, new packaging equipment including a 750ml bottling line built out with cork and caging capabilities. With the new equipment on line and processes dialed in, the brewery has been busy packaging the upcoming years many sought after and limited release beers into the new 750ml bottles, complete with custom corks and cages as well as some very limited 1.5L Magnums of select barrels.

“2016 was a whirlwind of a year, “ said Chad Yakobson, Crooked Stave Owner and Brewmaster. “Our skilled production team doubled in size, and we re-developed each of our processes to maintain our vision as a world leader in the fermentation of sour and wild beer with quality continuing to guide each successful step forward. 2016 also saw us release clean beers to the market and those have taken off, being wildly successful for us. 2017 is the year where we get to show off all the hard work we have put in over the last 6 years to get to this point. We see this year as a turning point, we put processes in place capable of making beers in a creative and quality way that I’ve never seen any other brewery install.”

The brewery is set to release all of its Barrel Cellar Blends including L’Brett d’Or, Flor d’Lees, Origins and Nightmare on Brett in 750ml cork and cage format along with being 100% bottle conditioned. In addition to these brewery favorites, 2017 will see the creation of the Reserve Cellars Releases which includes a new 750ml limited offering each month. These are the breweries highly sought after fruit sours, produced with 100% whole fruit sourced locally from Colorado and Washington state, including favorites like L’Brett d’Raspberry, Persica, Surette Reserva with Palisade Peaches, Mama Bears Sour Cherry Pie and Nightmare on Brett Raspberry. Limited Reserve Cellars Releases have also made their way into 1.5L magnums to be released at various Taproom events. New for 2017 is the addition of taproom only releases. The brewery has been busy producing single barrel bottling’s and limited blends of new and creative beers. While the amount of bottles varies, some of these releases include as few as only 200 bottles.

“We see many of our 2017 taproom only releases selling out the day they are released, given the very small number of bottles packaged,” says, Brett Zarhte, Packaging Manager at Crooked Stave. “These bottling runs are over before they start they are so small. Our packaging team loves these runs, especially when we add a few 1.5L Magnums to the mix. It’s a beautiful bottle when it’s all said and done.”

First up for Crooked Stave is Nightmare in Brett Raspberry, just announced as’s top 50 beers released in 2016 with a perfect 100 rating. Set your calendars for February 14th, Valentines day and the annual release day of Nightmare on Brett Raspberry. The taproom is gearing up with custom made chocolates that incorporate the beer into the chocolate, a slew of vintage tapping’s and bottle releases including some 1.5L Magnums of the beer and the release of additional 750ml cork and cage bottles.
